Buying bars rather than production equipment? Review GFRP rebar and fiberglass reinforcing bars
Start from the bar specification, not the machine
Decide which standard the bars will be sold against before you ask for equipment. In North America that is usually ASTM D7957, which covers solid round GFRP bars supplied in cut lengths and bent shapes and sets minimum inside bend diameters. State DOT specifications build on it: South Carolina, for example, requires bars that are deformed, sand coated or both, lot tags on every bundle and a signed material certification with certified test values for every lot shipped. Each of those requirements maps to a station or a laboratory in the plant. Write the target diameters, surface type, bend shapes and test program first, then send that list with the equipment enquiry.
What a rebar line adds to a profile line
| Item | Why it exists | Include in the RFQ |
|---|---|---|
| Multi-strand pulling | Small round bars are pulled as several parallel strands to reach useful output | Number of strands, diameter range per strand, clamp or caterpillar arrangement |
| Surface deformation | D7957 and DOT specifications require a deformed or sand-coated surface for bond | Helical winding unit, rib forming or sand-coating station, and who supplies consumables |
| Resin containment | Vinyl ester and polyester systems with styrene need enclosed impregnation and extraction | Impregnation route (bath or injection) and exhaust connection points |
| Multi-zone curing | Thin round sections cure fast, but surface and core must both reach cure at the chosen speed | Number of heating zones and the control record format |
| Flying cut-off | Bars ship in fixed lengths; the saw must track several strands at line speed | Cut-length range and tolerance, dust extraction |
| Factory bend station | Field bending is not allowed, so stirrups, hooks and corners are formed during manufacturing | Whether bending is quoted, bend diameter range, and curing method for bends |
| Lot testing | Every lot needs certified test values before it can be sold under a DOT spec | Which tests are run in-house, which go to an outside laboratory, and sampling plan |
For the round cavity tooling itself, multi-cavity options and mandrel questions, review tube and rod pultrusion dies
Separate bar production from bending and finishing
A straight bar comes off the line cured and cut. A bent bar does not: GFRP cannot be bent after cure, so bends are formed while the resin is still uncured, in a separate fixture, and then cured. That is a different machine, a different cycle and often a different resin schedule. Ask the supplier to state whether bend production is inside the quotation, what shapes and diameters the fixture handles, and how bent bars are tested. The same applies to sand coating when it is applied as a separate pass, to end cutting for dowels, and to any threading for mechanical anchors. Each is a scope line, not an accessory.
Capacity is per strand, not per line
Quotations often give a line speed and a number of strands. Multiply them only after confirming that the speed applies to the largest diameter you intend to make and to the surface treatment you chose. Winding a helical rib slows the strand; sand coating adds a drying length; larger diameters cure more slowly. Ask for a witnessed trial on the actual diameter and surface type, with the speed, zone temperatures and pull force recorded, and build the capacity figure from that record. The published industry range for thermoset pultrusion is 0.02 to 3.0 m/min, which shows how wide the spread can be.
Testing is part of the plant
A rebar producer without a test program cannot supply a DOT project, whatever the line can make. Decide which properties you will test in-house, which you will send out, and how often. Typical lot certification covers dimensions, cross-sectional area, tensile strength and modulus, and bond or surface checks, with the method cited for each. Plan the laboratory, the sample cutting and the record system in the same budget as the line, and make the equipment supplier show which stations produce the samples the program needs.
How pultrx handles rebar line enquiries
Henan Zhongsheng, the manufacturer behind pultrx, produces GFRP rebar on its own lines and supplies finished bars for export. Equipment enquiries for rebar lines are reviewed as projects: send the diameter range, surface type, target output, bend shapes and the standard you will certify against, and pultrx returns a scoped proposal that names every station and every item quoted separately. A project enquiry does not establish an available catalogue machine, and no output figure is stated until a trial record exists.
| Scope boundary | Include in the RFQ | Evidence before acceptance |
|---|---|---|
| Straight bar production | Diameter list, surface type, standard | Labeled trial bars per diameter with parameter record |
| Surface deformation | Winding or sand-coating method and consumables | Surface check on trial bars |
| Bending | Shapes, bend diameters, included or excluded | Separate bend trial and inspection |
| Cutting and packing | Lengths, tolerance, bundle tagging | Cut inspection record |
| Lot testing | In-house versus outside tests, sampling plan | First lot certification with test values |

Questions buyers ask
- Can a standard profile pultrusion machine make GFRP rebar?
- It can pull a round bar, but a saleable rebar line also needs multi-strand pulling, a surface deformation station, a factory bend fixture and a lot test program. Treat those as scope items in the quotation.
- Why do rebar lines pull several strands at once?
- Bars of 4 to 32 mm are small sections. Pulling several strands in parallel through a multi-cavity die uses the puller and the heated die length efficiently.
- Can GFRP rebar be bent on site?
- No. DOT specifications prohibit field bending because it breaks the glass fibers. Bends are formed in the factory before cure, so a bend station is part of the plant scope if you intend to sell stirrups and hooks.
- What standard should the line be set up for?
- ASTM D7957 for North America; other markets use their own standards. Confirm the target standard before ordering, because surface type, bend diameters and test methods follow from it.
- Does pultrx sell a GFRP rebar machine from stock?
- No catalogue rebar machine is listed. Rebar line enquiries are reviewed as projects, and finished GFRP rebar is available for supply enquiries.
