Pultrusion Machine Selection: From Profile to Purchase

Pultrusion machine selection starts with the profile you need to make and the output you need to sell. Send the drawing, material package, production plan and plant interfaces together. Ask the manufacturer to justify the proposed pulling system, capacity, heating arrangement and acceptance trial against that brief before comparing prices.

Published by pultrx, the export partner for Henan Zhongsheng. This is a buyer planning guide; the manufacturer confirms project specifications in writing.

Define the first production job

Conventional pultrusion makes continuous profiles with a constant cross-section: reinforcement passes through resin impregnation and a heated forming die, and the resulting profile is cut to length. Composites UK describes this process in the source below. For procurement, start with your first commercial profile and separate confirmed orders from possible future products. A machine proposal based on an undefined future range is difficult to verify.

Give each drawing a revision. Identify overall width and height, hollow regions, wall changes, important dimensions, visible surfaces and required cut lengths. For fiberglass, also called glass fibre or GRP, specify the proposed resin and reinforcement rather than treating the material name as a complete recipe. Where material development is still open, ask for that work as a separate deliverable.

Separate pulling capacity from production output

The manufacturer's hydraulic catalog lists traction effort, clamping force and gripping dimensions separately. Treat these as separate selection checks. Do not choose a machine using tonnage alone, or assume that a catalog speed is a guaranteed rate for your profile. Ask engineering to document the proposed capacity, usable profile envelope and limitations for the actual die and materials. If catalog entries conflict, leave the disputed value open until it is confirmed in writing.

Describe output in saleable product per shift or per year, with the planned operating hours and product mix. Ask the supplier which assumptions cover changeovers, startup material and inspection rejects. The acceptance trial should identify the profile, material batch, operating conditions, measurement method and sample results. A demonstration of unloaded motion does not establish your finished-product output.

Choose the pulling method within the full line

Request a proposal for how the profile will be gripped and supported. Identify acceptable surface marks and deformation, and agree how these will be checked during the trial. If both hydraulic and caterpillar equipment are proposed, compare them using the same drawing and acceptance criteria. The puller comparison is one part of selection; it does not resolve resin handling, die heating, cutting or installation interfaces.

Approve interfaces before comparing totals

List the creel, resin handling, preformers, die, heaters, puller, cut-off and downstream handling. Mark each as supplier scope, buyer scope or unresolved. For retained equipment, require an interface drawing and name the party responsible for compatibility. Send your available floor space, handling route, electrical supply and destination requirements early; these belong in the quotation, not in an arrival-day discussion.

  1. Freeze the launch-profile and material brief.
  2. Obtain the manufacturer's proposed configuration and written exclusions.
  3. Approve the interface drawings and site requirements.
  4. Agree the factory acceptance test, sample records and correction process.
  5. Compare complete quotation scope and release the order against approved documents.

Questions buyers ask

Can I select a pultrusion machine from profile width alone?
No. Supply the complete drawing, materials, intended output and tooling interfaces. Ask engineering to confirm capacity, gripping, heating and the usable envelope together.
Does maximum catalog speed equal production capacity?
No. Require output to be demonstrated for the agreed profile and material package, with the acceptance criteria and operating assumptions recorded.
What should I send before asking for a machine recommendation?
Send a controlled drawing, resin and reinforcement details, output target, launch product mix, plant voltage/frequency, available layout and destination. Identify inputs that still need development.
