Buying From an FRP Profile Manufacturer in China: Supplier Checks, Customs and Shipping

Finding an FRP profile manufacturer in China is easy; confirming that the company on the quotation makes the profile, owns the die and will stand behind the shipment takes more work. This guide covers the checks that happen before the RFQ and after it: who you are buying from, how to verify a Chinese company, who owns a custom die, how pultruded profiles are classified at customs, and how cut lengths, Incoterms and packing affect the delivered cost. The product specification itself is covered in the FRP profile RFQ checklist.

Published by pultrx, the export trading company of Henan Zhongsheng. This is a buyer planning guide; the manufacturer confirms project specifications in writing.

The short answer

  1. Identify the manufacturer and the seller by registered name, and check both against the Chinese company register.
  2. See the production: running pultrusion lines, the die shop and the inspection area, in person, by video or through an inspection agency.
  3. For custom sections, agree in writing who pays for the die, who owns it and where it is kept.
  4. Agree the samples, batch inspection and test reports before order release, using the RFQ checklist.
  5. Before the price is final, confirm the customs classification, the Incoterm, the cut lengths that fit the container and the packing.

Factory, trading company or the factory's export company

Three kinds of companies answer an RFQ for FRP profiles from China. They can all deliver good profiles; what differs is who is accountable for the product and how far the seller is from the production line.

Who you are buying from, and what to check for each.
Supplier typeWhat you getWhat to check
Manufacturer exporting directlyDirect contact with production; the manufacturer is also the sellerExport experience, English documents, who handles shipping and claims
Independent trading companyOne contact for several factories and product typesWhich factory makes your profile, whether you may audit it, whether the factory name appears on the documents
Factory-affiliated export companyThe factory's own seller, handling contract, export customs and documentsThe link between the two companies, the manufacturer named on the quotation, who gives the product warranty

pultrx is the third type. Henan Zhongsheng Composite Material Co., Ltd. makes the profiles at its factory in Xinxiang, Henan. pultrx is its directly affiliated export trading company in Shanghai and acts as seller and exporter of record. The quotation names both, so the buyer knows who makes the product and who signs the contract.

Verify the company before you send drawings

Every Chinese company has an 18-character unified social credit code printed on its business license. Use it to look the company up in the National Enterprise Credit Information Publicity System (gsxt.gov.cn), which shows the registered name, status, registered address, legal representative and business scope. Check that the name on the license matches the name on the quotation, the contract, the commercial invoice and the bank account. A mismatch is not always fraud, but it needs a written explanation.

Then check production. A pultrusion factory shows itself quickly: lines running with resin baths or injection boxes, pullers and cut-off saws; a die store and die maintenance area; fiber and resin storage; and a place where profiles are measured and recorded. A video call walking from the line to the inspection table is a reasonable first step; a visit or an independent inspection agency is the stronger one.

Custom sections: who owns the die

A custom pultruded profile needs its own steel die, and the die cost is usually quoted separately from the profiles. Settle four points in the contract: whether the buyer pays for the die in full, in part or through the profile price; whether the die is reserved for the buyer's orders; where it is stored and for how long without orders; and whether it can be released to the buyer or another factory, and at what cost. Ask for the die to be marked with the buyer's drawing number.

Samples, inspection and documents

Agree before the order what a sample proves and what batch inspection checks: dimensions at defined locations, straightness, surface, color and any tests named in the contract. A company certificate or a catalogue data sheet does not show that the ordered profile meets your specification; ask for reports tied to the ordered section and batch. If you use a third-party inspector, name the agency, the sampling and who pays in the purchase order.

Customs classification: the US example

The first six digits of the tariff code follow the Harmonized System in most countries, so US rulings show how pultruded profiles are usually read. Heading 3916 covers rods, sticks and profile shapes of plastics, whether or not surface-worked but not otherwise worked. US Customs has placed glass-fiber pultruded profiles there, including a hollow profile from China that was cut to length and painted. Once a profile is worked further, for example punched with slots, it can move to another heading.

Hollow GFRP profile from China, cut to length and painted3916.90.50005.8% ad valoremN357163 (2026)
Same pultruded profile with punched slots3925.90.0000 (builders' ware)5.3% ad valoremN353644 (2025)

Drilling, machining, assembly or kitting can change the classification, and so can products that are not plain profiles, such as grating panels, stair treads or fabricated parts. Describe the goods exactly as they will ship, and ask your broker whether a binding ruling is worth requesting for a repeat product.

Incoterms, cut lengths and packing

Many quotations from China, including ours, default to FOB at a named Chinese port; pultrx quotes CIF or DAP on request. The ICC notes that for containerised goods handed to a carrier before loading, the seller is well advised to sell on FCA rather than FOB, because risk under FOB only passes when the goods are on board. If your forwarder or bank prefers FCA, ask for it in the RFQ; the Incoterm in the quotation is the one that applies.

Cut length decides the container. A 40 ft high cube container has an internal length of about 12.03 m and a door opening of about 2.34 × 2.58 m, and these values vary by container. Leave room for packing and loading when you set cut lengths, and ask the factory what maximum length it packs into a standard container. Longer profiles need open-top or flat-rack equipment, or a joint in the design. Light FRP sections often fill a container's volume before its weight limit, so bundle size and nesting affect the freight cost per meter.

Agree the packing in the quotation: bundle size, protective film or wrapping for visible faces, end protection, labels that match the order schedule, and wooden supports or crates. Wooden packaging for export is heat-treated or fumigated and marked under ISPM 15; check the destination's own rules for wood packaging.

Payment and paperwork

Tie payments to milestones you can verify, such as order confirmation, sample approval or batch inspection, and shipment documents. Pay only to a bank account in the contracting company's name, and confirm any change of bank details by phone with a known contact; changed bank details sent by email are a common fraud pattern in international trade. The shipment documents normally include the commercial invoice, packing list, bill of lading and certificate of origin, plus the inspection and test reports named in the contract.

Questions buyers ask

What is the HS code for FRP profiles?
Pultruded glass-fiber profiles that are not further worked are usually classified in heading 3916 (profile shapes of plastics); US Customs has used 3916.90.5000. Profiles that are punched, machined or fabricated can fall under other headings, such as 3925 for builders' ware. Confirm the code for your goods with your customs broker.
Should I buy FRP profiles from a factory or a trading company?
Either can work. What matters is that the quotation names the manufacturer, that you can verify and audit it, and that the contract says who gives the product warranty. A factory's own export company combines factory accountability with an export-focused seller.
Who owns the die for a custom FRP profile?
Whoever the contract says. Agree payment, ownership, storage period and release terms for the die before ordering, and have the die marked with your drawing number.
Can I visit the factory?
Yes. Henan Zhongsheng's factory is in Muye District, Xinxiang, Henan Province. Factory visits, a live video walk-through of the lines and independent inspections can be arranged through the Shanghai office.
How long can FRP profiles be for container shipping?
A 40 ft high cube container is about 12.03 m long inside, so cut lengths are set with room for packing and loading. Ask the factory for the maximum length it ships in a standard container; longer profiles need special equipment or a joint.
