Molded vs Pultruded Grating: How to Specify the Right Panel

Molded FRP grating forms an integral grid; pultruded grating assembles pultruded bearing bars with cross members. That construction affects how a panel carries load and how its supports must be arranged. Square-mesh molded grating can provide bearing in two directions, while rectangular molded and pultruded products require attention to the principal bearing direction. Choose from the offered panel's load data and installation conditions, not from thickness or the process name alone.

Strongwell's construction comparison and Fibergrate's selection chart support these distinctions. They do not establish interchangeable load ratings between manufacturers. UK specifications often use moulded, GRP and glass fibre; use the same drawings and acceptance criteria whichever spelling appears in a quotation.

Specify the supported span and the load case

Provide a layout showing support locations, bearing edges and the direction of span. State whether the design involves a distributed load, a concentrated load or equipment contact, and identify the required deflection criterion. Ask for a load table or calculation that matches the proposed panel and those conditions. Two panels of equal depth are not automatically equivalent: bearing geometry, reinforcement, resin and support assumptions can differ.

A product's two-direction capability does not mean every installation is supported on every edge. Cutouts, penetrations and panel joints can change the available load path. Have the project designer resolve edge support, local reinforcement, clips and any unsupported cut edge before approving the panel layout. Do not extrapolate a published table beyond its stated loading and support conditions.

Keep mesh pitch separate from clear opening

Mesh pitch measures the repeat spacing of the grid; clear opening measures the unobstructed gap between members. They are different dimensions. Where a specification limits openings, request a dimensioned section showing the actual gap and the surface configuration. Include requirements for pedestrian use, drainage, dropped objects or equipment access in the project brief. A catalogue mesh label alone does not confirm compliance with those requirements.

Match the resin and surface to the service

List the chemicals, concentration, temperature and exposure pattern that the grating may encounter. Identify outdoor exposure and any required fire or electrical tests. Ask for evidence tied to the offered material and product rather than treating a resin family name as an approval. Describe the required surface finish and the conditions under which slip performance must be assessed. Strongwell's selection guidance identifies service environment alongside loading as part of product selection.

Prepare a panel schedule that suppliers can quote

  1. Give each panel an item number, drawing revision, finished dimensions and quantity.
  2. Show supports, span direction, cutouts, penetrations and required edge treatment on the layout.
  3. State loading, deflection and any project qualification criteria; identify who approves the design.
  4. Specify the proposed construction, resin, color, surface and opening requirements, or ask the supplier to propose them with evidence.
  5. Separate panels, cutting, sealing, clips, support members, testing, packing and freight in the quotation.

Henan Zhongsheng lists both molded and pultruded grating. Use those catalogue entries to identify the product route, then obtain confirmation of the offered configuration, minimum order, manufacturing availability and delivery schedule. Published sizes do not establish stock or suitability for a project. pultrx can prepare the enquiry around the supplied schedule; engineering approval and supplier confirmation remain separate purchasing steps.

Questions buyers ask

Is pultruded grating always stronger than molded grating?
No universal comparison is valid without the exact panels and load case. Compare applicable load and deflection data at the intended span, support arrangement and loading. Do not use equal panel depth as proof of equal capacity.
Does all molded grating carry load equally in both directions?
No. Square-mesh and rectangular-mesh products have different configurations. Check the offered panel's bearing directions and load data, then align the support layout with that information.
Can I use a grating manufacturer's catalogue as the installation drawing?
A catalogue is a selection reference. The project needs an approved layout covering supports, panel dimensions, bearing direction, cutouts, attachments and the applicable design conditions.
