Fiberglass rectangular tube

A fiberglass rectangular tube is a hollow glass fiber reinforced polymer section with two different nominal outside side dimensions. Also described as a GRP or glass fibre box section, it needs a complete width, height and wall specification. A single published width cannot identify the part, its internal opening or its installed orientation.

Selection notes

  1. Define both outside sides

  2. Show the installed orientation

Choose the configuration

What to resolve before selecting this product

Define both outside sides

Label width and height directly on the drawing. If a supplier reverses their order in a quotation, reconcile the labels before acceptance rather than relying on a text size description.

Show the installed orientation

Identify which face is vertical and where loads and connections act. Turning the section changes its geometry relative to the assembly; do not approve rotation as a cosmetic change.

Control the internal envelope

An insert needs two clear dimensions and corner clearance. Indicate whether it enters from one or both ends and whether internal obstructions from fasteners are permitted.

Evidence and purchasing requirements

A complete rectangular section needs two sides

Order detailWhy it needs its own drawing reference
Width and heightThe source provides only one outside-side range; request the missing dimension instead of assuming a square section.
Long and short facesHole patterns and mounting clearances must refer to the intended face.
Internal openingSpecify both clear dimensions, corner geometry and insertion length.
Installed orientationShow the mounting direction and identify the design review required for a rotated substitute.

A rectangular outline does not establish superiority over a round or square tube. Compare complete sections under the actual loading and support arrangement using product-specific properties. The supplier catalogue supports the product form, but does not provide enough geometry to select a finished part or establish allowable load. Record any drawing changes in the order revision history.

Supply workflow

From product specification to delivery

Use these stages to define responsibilities, interfaces and the evidence needed at handover.

  1. 01

    Complete the section schedule

List width, height, wall, cut lengths and quantities with units.

  2. 02

    Resolve orientation and interfaces

Confirm long-face drilling, end datums and insert clearance with the factory.

  3. 03

    Approve the proposed sample

Check the intended assembly orientation and record accepted dimensional deviations.

  4. 04

    Verify the production lots

Match drawing revision, part labels and inspection results before dispatch.

Scope of supply

Define the supply package and its options

Request an itemized quotation against these lists. A catalogue description does not confirm that every item is included.

Product and work to specify

  • Finished rectangular tubes matching the accepted drawing revision and quantities
  • Agreed packing, part labels and batch inspection documents

Options and services to price separately

  • Long-face or short-face machining, samples and assembly testing
  • Custom tooling, additional documentation and freight as agreed

Applications

Applications to discuss with engineering

  • Frame members subject to project design
  • Bracketed assemblies requiring distinct long and short faces

Cross-sections

Product forms and catalogue examples

  • Rectangular hollow section to a complete dimensioned drawing

Prepare your enquiry

Send an enquiry that can be quoted

Include the drawings and requirements below so engineering can confirm the configuration, exclusions and lead time.

Include in your RFQ

  • Both outside dimensions, wall and corner details
  • Installed orientation and long/short face labels
  • Hole datums, inserts and end-access requirements
  • Loads, exposure and required material documentation
  • Cut-length quantities, packaging, destination and delivery request

Agree the acceptance evidence

  • Measure width and height separately against the approved drawing.
  • Verify wall and corner clearance at agreed locations.
  • Check holes on the correct face and from the specified end datum.
  • Inspect twist, straightness, cut ends and lot traceability.

FAQ

Questions buyers ask

Can the published width identify a rectangular tube?
No. The second outside side and wall are needed, along with corner details where fit matters. Ask for a complete section drawing before placing an order.
Can I rotate the section to suit a bracket?
Submit the revised orientation for review. Confirm mounting clearances, load direction and connection details before changing the accepted assembly.
